HosmartAI Open Calls: the statistics are here!

HosmartAI has organised two rounds of Open Calls (OC), one for innovative technologies, and the other for pilots. Both open calls managed to attract a total of 91 applications, from a wide range of eligible countries. Let’s dive even deeper and compare the statistics of each one of them.

Open Call 1, which was open from the 8th of February to the 8th of April 2022, looking for Startups/SMEs developing AI-powered technologies for the Healthcare sector attracted 43 applications.

From the 15th of September to the 15th of November 2022, HosmartAI  looked for AI/Robotics pilots for smart healthcare, to demonstrate the value and benefits of HosmartAI technologies in different healthcare environments across Europe. As a result, a total of 48 applications were submitted.

Countries

The first Open Call received proposals from 18 eligible countries, with a predominance of startups/SMEs from Italy (19%), Spain (14%) and Greece (12%), followed by Belgium (9%) and Albania (7%)

On the other hand, the second Open Call attracted applicants from 21 eligible countries. Spain (28%) and Italy (9%) were the most represented countries by the entities that applied, followed by Portugal, Romania and Turkey (7% each).

The figures below show that a large number of countries were covered, thanks to the communication efforts for getting participants from all eligible countries.

By calling for consortia, OC2 enabled the establishment of interesting cross-collaborations. Out of the 4 proposals selected, half of them were submitted by consortia of entities based on different countries: we can find one consortium formed by partners based in Greece and The Netherlands,as well as a consortium joining partners from Georgia and Italy.

Type of beneficiaries

Regarding the type of applicants, the two open calls targeted different profiles. OC1 was only open for startups/SMEs, hence 100% of the applicants matched this type.

Open Call 2 however was looking for consortia composed of:

  • At least 1 technology provider/integrator: AI and robotics start-ups/SMEs (innovators)
  • And technology adopters: healthcare facilities (end users)
  • Optionally applicants could engage research centre/academia, and/or another SME/start-up taking a role as a competence centre, collaborating in strategically important area(s), between the innovation and healthcare industry.

This resulted in a wider distribution of the type of applicants in OC2.

Proposals selected

Via the two open calls, HosmartAI ecosystem was successfully expanded with 13 beneficiaries bringing 8 innovative technologies.

In Open Call 1, a pool of 9 external experts performed a transparent evaluation, shortlisting the top 10 applications for an interview. The process ended up with the selection of the 4 applications with the highest scores, out of the 43 submitted (9%).

In Open Call 2, a panel composed of 12 external experts also performed a transparent evaluation, and shortlisted top 8 applications for an interview.  As a result, the 4 most innovative proposals were selected, out of the 48 submitted (8%).

Budget allocation per country

Finally, regarding the funding that HosmartAI has approved to provide to the selected third parties, it is worth mentioning the diversity of countries covered. This is even more evident in Open Call 2 (6 countries) that targeted consortia, instead of single startups/SMEs as in Open Call 1 (4 countries).
